Painted Brick in the Draft Ordinance

Not regulated

Those attending Meetings 12 and 13 (23 people in each meeting) decided to prohibit painting stone or brick.

Unpainted brick and stone of Contributing homes built before 1960 should not be painted. There was discussion of all Contributing homes being subject to this restriction, no matter what year they were built.

2/25/2023 City email “LWCD Expansion Meeting Update”).Following Neighborhood Meeting 13, February 13, 2023.

But Forty-Four (44%) of us have painted brick/stone homes. And Fifty Percent (50%) of the Neighborhood Committee Members live in Painted Brick houses.

Aren’t ordinances supposed to be guided by what exists?

Above: 5 of 10 Neighborhood Committee Members’ houses have painted brick or stucco.

Dilbeck: Developed a Unique Formulation to Whitewash Houses

We attended a lecture by architect and architectural historian Willis Winters on October 18, 2023, at the Charles Dilbeck-designed El Ranchito Restaurant on Jefferson in Oak Cliff. Mr. Willis showed numerous white houses that Dilbeck had whitewashed in his proprietary formula, like this house at 4200 Shenandoah and Douglas, built in 1936.
